Mediating Modesty: Fashioning Faithful Bodies

Hana Tajima-Simpson addressing the symposium held at the London College of Fashion on 15th June 2011. The event was hosted by the research project, part of the Religion and Society Programme, funded by the UK Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences Research Councils.

Hana Tajima-Simpson is a designer and a convert to Islam. Together with a business partner she launched Maysaa.com in 2010. They aimed to look distinctive, established and trustworthy. They saw as their competition not other “modest” labels but high street stores. Their distinctive feature lay in the designs themselves. As a new convert she came to design without preconceptions, and recognising the wide range of cultures represented by potential shoppers. 4.34
