HUMANISING HEALTHCARE

17 November 12

A Heythrop Colloquium HUMANISING HEALTHCARE Dr Gerald A. Arbuckle SM Dr Desmond Ryan Saturday November 17th 2012 9.30 – 5.00 Heythrop College University of London £25 (Refreshments provided) BOOKING ESSENTIAL

Healthcare systems are reinventing themselves to meet rising costs, and to respond to the needs of increasingly well-informed, demanding populations.  Driven by political and economic concerns, the culture of reform in the West is predominantly secular, technical and consumerist.  And yet the ‘founding narratives’ of Western healthcare systems were religious, ethical and charitable. Over much of the world, it is to their faith that people look to find meaning in suffering, sickness and death.  Can there be a place for humane values in the next generation of healthcare systems?

At this colloquium, Gerald Arbuckle and Desmond Ryan bring the insights of anthropology and the social sciences to bear on current healthcare reform.  Dr. Gerald A. Arbuckle is co-director of the Refounding Institute in Sydney, Australia, a Marist priest and author of a number of books on healthcare and on religious life.  Dr Desmond Ryan, Honorary Fellow in the School of Health in Social Science, University of Edinburgh, has researched religious, educational and public health issues in the UK and overseas.

This event is an initiative of the Heythrop Institute: Religion and Society (HIRS) and the Heythrop Religious Life Institute (RLI).  The day will close with the launch of Dr Arbuckle’s new book, Humanizing Healthcare Reforms, courtesy of Jessica Kingsley Publications.
